Smoking triples the chance of post surgical complications.
If you are hospitalized, we can help you to stop smoking.
STOP SMOKING FROM THE DAY OF YOUR CONSULTATION
- We recommend that you stop smoking at least 8 weeks before surgery.
- Hospitalized smokers use nicotine substitutes, such as patches.
- Risks can be reduced - though not eliminated - if you stop, or reduce smoking closer to the date of surgery, by using nicotine substitutes. The benefits of stopping smoking can be seen even if you stop as late as 3 weeks to 48 hours before surgery. For patients who cough and wheeze when they stop smoking, a good nicotine substitute should be used, together with respiratory therapy.
